Corner Storage Solutions — Reclaim the Space Behind the Door

A corner base cabinet holds roughly a third more volume than a standard unit — and without the right mechanism, most of it is unreachable dead space behind the door hinge. Carousels, magic corners and pole-free systems bring almost all of that volume back into daily use.

Three Approaches

Carousel, Magic Corner & Pole-Free — Which Corner System Suits You?

Corner cabinets vary in shape — true L-shape, diagonal-fronted, or a blind corner tucked behind an adjoining run — and each mechanism is suited to a different layout and budget.

Rotating Carousel

A full or three-quarter circle of shelving rotates 360° around a central pole. The most affordable and widely fitted corner solution — works well in diagonal-fronted corner cabinets from 800–900mm.

Magic Corner / Wari Corner®

Two sets of baskets — one on the door, one behind it — are mechanically linked so the rear basket automatically swings out to meet the front one as the door opens, giving full access to both without reaching in.

Pole-Free (Recorner maxx®)

Shelves are side-mounted directly to the carcase walls with no central column at all, maximising usable space for bulky items like stockpots and mixing bowls. Shelves rotate independently of one another.

Door Hinge Angles Matter More Than You'd Think

Swing-out and pole-free corner mechanisms need the door to open significantly further than a standard hinge allows — typically 165° or more — so the baskets can clear the cabinet fully before you reach in.

This has to be specified when the cabinets are ordered, not decided afterwards. A standard 95–110° hinge simply won't allow a Wari corner® or Recorner maxx® system to open fully, so we always confirm hinge spec at the design stage for any corner storage project.

Corner Storage FAQs

Corner Storage Solution Questions

What homeowners most often ask before specifying corner storage.

What's the minimum cabinet width for a corner carousel?
Rotating carousels are generally available from around 800mm corner cabinets, with the most common size being 900mm, which accommodates both three-quarter and full-circle carousel shelving with a typical 760mm diameter. Pole-free and magic corner systems are usually specified for similarly sized corner cabinets but check exact minimums against your cabinet supplier's carcass dimensions.
Can corner carousels be retro-fitted to existing cabinets?
Rotating carousels generally can be retrofitted into an existing corner cabinet, since they mount to the cabinet base and don't depend on the door hinge. Pole-free and swing-out magic corner systems are more particular about hinge angle and door mounting, so retrofitting these usually needs a site survey first to confirm the hinge can be upgraded to the required opening angle.
How much weight can corner shelving hold?
Pole-free Recorner maxx® shelving is rated to 27.5kg per shelf, comfortably handling stockpots, large mixing bowls and stacked cookware. Wari corner® swing-out baskets carry up to 9.5kg on the rear basket and 8kg on the door basket. We size the system to your actual cookware collection during the planning visit rather than assuming a standard load.
Which corner system gives the most storage capacity?
Pole-free systems like Recorner maxx® give the largest usable volume, since there's no central column eating into the shelf area — ideal for bulky cookware. Magic corner and Wari corner® systems maximise practical reach rather than raw volume, since both front and rear baskets present themselves fully. Standard carousels sit in between on both counts and are the most budget-friendly option.
Do corner units work in both base and wall cabinets?
Most of the mechanisms on this page — carousels, magic corners and pole-free shelving — are designed for base corner cabinets, where the extra depth and weight capacity are most valuable. Wall corner cabinets more commonly use simpler rotating shelf carousels or bi-fold door systems, which we can also advise on during your planning visit.
